Condos – what most people know as apartments – vary in number and availability in Vancouver West Side neighbourhoods. Two-bedroom units are particularly prized as they offer a starting option for families, and space enough for downsizers who may be shifting from a detached home into smaller quarters. Perhaps because of the dominance of detached homes, two-bedroom apartments actually outnumber one-bedroom condos here by nearly 2,000. There are more than 9,500 units in the current inventory, as well as 1,300 three-bedroom units.

While often more expensive, not just because of their larger size but because people attached a premium on family-sized units, the space comes in handy. Those who can afford one will find they offer room for an extra bedroom, a home office, or just extra living space. Set in the midst of one of the most exclusive residential areas in Western Canada, two-bedroom apartments make a castle of the standard condo. Given the predominance of detached homes, West Side two-bedroom condos are typically newer and feature more contemporary stylings than older apartments, such as older duplexes and the early West End condos that originally whet Vancouver’s appetite for condo living.

The greatest growth in two-bedroom apartments in recent years has been at UBC, where established local and international developers have built classically inspired residences with a West Coast sensibility. The interior finishes reflect the tones of local environment – sea and sky and forest – while the construction aims at harmony with the environment. Many have some level of environmental certification that demonstrates their environmental efficiency and internal health.
